Lincoln, Neb. — The Fremont Disaster Preparedness Project was selected as one of 200 national finalists vying for a $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant. The top 40 causes earning the highest number of votes will each receive a grant. From Oct. 26 through Nov. 4, anyone with a valid email address can vote daily at www.neighborhoodassist.com/entry/1979211 to bring the money to Fremont. Winner announcements will be Nov. 30.

This project will have a lasting impact on the community. Some disasters cannot be prevented, yet actions can be taken to prepare for a variety of incidents and minimize the risks associated with them. The project would enable Fremont nonprofits, organizations, and agencies to provide disaster preparedness education and resources for the Fremont community. Nebraska Extension, the outreach entity of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, submitted the application.

“Through community partnerships, we hope to offer programs, workshops and resources on topics like weather hazards, emergency kits, family communication plans and health information cards,” said Ashley Mueller, Extension educator.

The goal of the project is to increase community resilience. People will be empowered to take action and help their families, peers and fellow community members take steps towards preparedness by participating in disaster preparedness education.

“Our whole-community approach to disaster preparedness is aimed to meet the needs of Fremont, engage and inspire a significant portion of our community, and make it a stronger, self-sustaining community,” said Mueller. “We need Fremont to rally around this cause and vote to bring the grant our way.”
