NU Animal Science Events Will Set the PASE

LINCOLN, Neb. — A new University of Nebraska event July 10-11 will supplement the livestock and other judging contests, formerly held during the Nebraska State Fair, with animal science education for 4-H youth.

"Setting the PASE: Premier Animal Science Events" will offer youth a fun and educational environment, mixed with competition and a chance to be recognized, said Rosie Nold, NU animal science youth specialist.

"We decided to make the judging contest more of an event that is geared toward animal science and education, getting youth to campus and letting them compete," Nold said. "The events will offer an excellent opportunity for learning and developing communication and decision-making skills."

In addition to the skills learned while judging, youth will learn more about animal science, the department, and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

PASE events include the 4-H general livestock quiz bowl; a tractor operators contest; and judging contests for 4-H livestock, meats for consumers, poultry, 4-H and FFA dairy cattle.

Participants will be involved with hands-on activities and campus tours. They also may meet individually with faculty and obtain information on CASNR application, scholarships and financial data.

Contest deadline is June 30. Lodging will be available in the East Campus dormitories July 9-10. Preregistration is necessary. The deadline to reserve a dorm is June 23 at $12 per person per night. Meals are available. Check with a local Cooperative Extension office for qualification and county deadlines, as some may be earlier. All registrations must by done through the local extension office.

4-H'ers involved in dairy, meats for consumers and poultry judging contests will pay a non-refundable entry fee of $5 per person per contest. Participants in the livestock judging contest will pay $10 per person, which includes the cost of a meal. Quiz bowl participants will pay $20 per team.

To receive more information, contact your local extension office, check the NU 4-H Web page or call Nold at (402) 472-6479.
