'Weathering Tough Times' Satellite Broadcast Set For Sept. 5
LINCOLN, Neb. — A multi-state rural response satellite training workshop Sept. 5 will provide an overview of the issues facing farmers, ranchers and rural businesses during this time of rural crisis.
"Weathering Tough Times" will be broadcast from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (CDT) at sites around the state, said Kathy Bosch, family life specialist at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff.
NU, Kansas State University and Iowa State University specialists have teamed to provide this half-day of training to individuals who work with farm, ranch and rural families.
Clergy, business professionals, medical and mental health staff are urged to attend this free training, she said.
"Not only are farmers and ranchers suffering with drought, water shortages and occasional flood conditions, but they continue to contend with low commodity prices, high production costs, pests and diseases," Bosch said. "In addition to impacting the family farm, many businesspeople and communities who depend on the rural economy are beginning to suffer the consequences of these tough times."
Information will be provided on behavioral health and management, family strengths, financial management and techniques to effectively respond to farmers, ranchers and rural business owners.
Presentations focus on helping farmers and ranchers during this rural crisis, the importance of mental health and well-being, recognizing family strengths, understanding the depth of financial responsibilities, and implications for individuals and families.
In addition, each state will provide a resource packet with major support services listed and options for planning community rural response meetings. A toll-free number will be available to call in questions.

Cooperative Extension is part of NU's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
