NU Workshop Will Focus On Caring For Trees During Drought

LINCOLN, Neb. — A March University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension workshop will offer advice to arborists, nursery professionals, grounds keepers, master gardeners and landowners on how to care for trees during drought.

Trees and Drought: Surviving The Tough Times will be offered at six locations across the state from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Dates and locations are:

March 11 – Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff

March 12 – North Platte College Auditorium in North Platte

March 13 – Hastings Community College in Hastings

March 17 – Douglas/Sarpy County Extension Office in Omaha

March 18 – Nebraska East Union on UNL's East Campus

March 20 – Northeast Community College Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.

"Trees across Nebraska are showing drought effects such as wilt and foliage discoloration as well as increased pest problems and death," said Christine Meyer, NU forestry information and education assistant. "The workshops will focus on how to manage landscape and rural trees with depleted subsoil moisture conditions and how to develop landscapes during dry conditions."

Other topics include minimizing drought damage, identifying pests and diseases, selecting the right trees for dry soils and successfully planting, maintaining and pruning trees during drought.

Registration is $20 and includes lunch, breaks and workshop materials. Registration must be received by March 5. The International Society of Arboriculture and the Nebraska Arborists Association each have assigned 5.5 continuing education units to this workshop. For more information or to register, contact Meyer at (402)472-9869 or visit the Nebraska Forest Service Web site at http://www.nfs.unl.edu/TCW2003.htm.

The tree care workshop is sponsored by the Nebraska Forest Service, the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and Cooperative Extension in NU's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
