DeFrain Honored for Extension Achievement

LINCOLN, Neb. — John DeFrain, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension specialist in family and consumer sciences, received the Early Career Achievement Award at the annual meeting of the National Council on Family Relations in Vancouver, British Columbia.

DeFrain was cited for collaborating with others to develop a Nebraska Farm and Ranch Families in Distress Coalition focused on the serious challenges rural families face such as severe weather conditions, low farm prices, lack of job opportunities and shrinking rural infrastructure.

The awards committee also noted DeFrain's leadership in helping social service professionals move toward a “family strengths model” in family development. DeFrain and colleagues coordinated annual family strengths symposia that brought people together from across the country to share and develop research on the most effective ways to cultivate family vitality.

DeFrain has been an extension specialist since 1999.
