Nebraska Poultry Group Presents Awards, Names Officers

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Poultry Industries announced its annual awards and new officers during its 2004 convention March 10-11 in Columbus.

Dr. Richard Lee Dutton of Wakefield and William B. Bevans of Waverly are the 2003 Nebraska Poultry Industries Persons of the Year.

Dutton, a veterinarian who now works for the Michael Foods Egg Products Co., is an expert in poultry disease who has been particularly active in controlling and eliminating Salmonella enteritidis. He is president of the Nebraska Poultry Improvement Association.

Bevans is a longtime turkey farmer, raising more than 250,000 turkeys a year. He is vice president of the Nebraska Turkey Growers Cooperative in Gibbon and Norbest Inc. In Midvale, Utah. He also is past president of the Nebraska Poultry Industries, president of the Nebraska Turkey Federation and a director of the National Turkey Federation.

Ted Hartung of Lincoln was named to the Nebraska Poultry Hall of Fame. Hartung chaired the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Poultry Science for seven years, playing a key role in assuring the future of the industry in Nebraska. Also, his research on turkey meat's nutrient content contributed to current labeling of turkey meat products. Hartung's other duties at UNL included head of the Department of Food Science and Technology, dean of the College of Agriculture, director of Communications and Information Technology and associate vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The 2004 White House Egg Artist is Vicky Gellinger, Bancroft.
