Pork Niche Production and Marketing Seminar Offered in Norfolk

LINCOLN, Neb. — A March 1 niche production and marketing seminar will teach pork producers how to add the extra income of a niche market to their operations.

Niche Production and Marketing: A New Shopping List will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.

Producers will learn what niche markets are, the benefits of niche marketing and how to participate in niche marketing, said Al Prosch, University of Nebraska Pork Central coordinator and a seminar speaker.

"This seminar starts at the producer level and will explain what production attributes can become market items," he said. "Consumers are interested in how animals are raised or whether or not they are given antibiotics, for example. This seminar will teach producers just how they can make niches work."

Other speakers include Scott Gemar, a genetics producer from Sutton; Dave McLaren, university food industry consultant; Darrell Mark, university livestock marketing specialist; Kurt Van Hulzen, veterinarian; and Duane Reese, university swine specialist.

The seminar will conclude with a question and answer panel of producers who have successfully marketed niche pork products.

For more information or to register for the free seminar, call (800) 767-5287. Registration is needed by Feb. 21 for the lunch count.

This seminar is sponsored by Cooperative Extension in the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Nebraska Pork Producers and the National Pork Board.
