Unicameral Youth Conference Slated in June
LINCOLN, Neb. — Unicameral Youth Conference 2005 will give youth a chance to learn the ins and outs of Nebraska's unique legislative process.
Registration has begun for the June 12-15 conference in Lincoln. Youth in grades 9-12 are eligible.
Participants will learn how to make a difference in their communities, learn the art of debate, make friends with similar interests and learn how to be a state senator, said Bob Meduna, University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension educator and district 4-H youth program coordinator.
Participants will spend three days at the Capitol interacting with legislative aides, policy experts and others, Meduna said.
They will take on the role of state senator, learning how a bill becomes law, how individuals are affected by issues, how conflict and controversy are part of the legislative system, the importance of compromise and the connection between Nebraska's government and world affairs.
Registration is required as space is limited. The cost of $200 covers all programs, meals and housing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus. Some scholarships are available. Participants do not have to be 4-H members.
