Nationally Known Speaker and Author to Present at 2005 Nebraska Rural Institute
LINCOLN, Neb. — A CEO-turned-author who teaches community leaders nationwide how to help their small towns prosper will be the featured speaker at the 10th annual Nebraska Rural Institute Sept. 20-22 in York.
Jack Schultz, author of "Boomtown, USA: The 7 1/2 Keys to Big Success in Small Towns" and chief executive of Agracel Inc., an Illinois-based industrial development firm, will explain to institute participants his fifth key to success – encouraging entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is the theme of this year's conference, "Entrepreneurial Engines and Economic Development Essentials."
"The institute offers rural community leaders an opportunity to share ideas, network with their peers and develop new skills and knowledge about rural development," said Charlotte Narjes, coordinator with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Center for Applied Rural Innovation.
Nine-time participant Jim Keeler of Lincoln said the institute is well worth attending.
"The number one thing I've gained from the conference is networking with rural providers and gaining a knowledge base of what's available to rural communities," said Keeler, key accounts representative for NMPP Energy.
Other speakers at this year's institute include Don Macke of the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship in Lincoln, who will present approaches to entrepreneurship, and John Allen, director of the Western Rural Development Center in Logan, Utah, and former director of UNL's CARI, who will speak on building the social infrastructure necessary to sustain a community.
Additional session themes include how to create economic vitality through housing, libraries, hospitals and entrepreneurship and the best practices for organizing a community. Mobile workshop topics include value-added agriculture and community and economic development. Evening entertainment also is planned.
