'Surviving the Drought' Workshops Scheduled June 5-6
LINCOLN, Neb. — Workshops in North Platte and Chadron next month will give agricultural producers an opportunity to share how they've learned to contend with several years of drought.
"Surviving the Drought: Lessons Learned from the 2000-2005 Drought in Nebraska" is scheduled at the Holiday Inn Express in North Platte June 5 and at Chadron State College's Student Center June 6. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. both days.
The workshops are based in part on surveys conducted by the Center for Rural Affairs in Walthill and the National Drought Mitigation Center, based at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They found that Nebraska's ag producers "have implemented a broad range of strategies to prepare for and deal with drought."
The North Platte workshop, which will focus on livestock production, will include an overview about survey findings by Cody Knutson of the drought center, along with presentations by several UNL experts.
In addition, several ranchers will share their experiences. Dave Hamilton will talk about his experience with grazing management amid drought; Homer Buell will discuss his use of grazing management software; and Lynn Meyers will reflect on living with drought.
The workshop will end with a panel discussion among presenters about drought preparedness and management.
The agenda for the Chadron workshop, which will include dryland crops as a topic, still is being developed.
The workshops are free. Space is limited, and pre-registration can be made by contacting Deborah Wood, (402) 472-6705, dwood1@unl.edu.
Sponsors include the National Drought Mitigation Center, Center for Rural Affairs and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
