Cow/Calf College Offers Seminar on Beef Issues, Management Strategies

LINCOLN, Neb. — A University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension seminar Jan. 23 at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center near Clay Center will give cow/calf, feedlot and other beef producers the opportunity to learn more about beef issues and management strategies.

Partners in Progress – Beef Seminar, presented by extension's Farmers and Ranchers College, will begin with 8:15 a.m. registration and refreshments.

Morning sessions will begin at 9 a.m. with an overview of the Meat Animal Research Center, presented by Mohammad Koohmaraie, U.S. MARC director.

Following topics and presenters include: Current Issues Affecting the Livestock Industry, Jim Pillen, Progressive Swine Technologies; and Animal ID, Dust, Ethanol and Other Issues Facing Cattlemen, Michael Kelsey, executive vice president, Nebraska Cattlemen Association.

Lunch will be rotated in with two herd management mini-sessions. Presentations include Don't Get Stuck When You Buy Feed, Matt Stockton, UNL ag economist; and Pasture Renovation and Reseeding, Steve Wallace, midwest territory manager, Barenbrug USA.

Afternoon presentations include Planning a New Cattle Feedlot, Christopher Henry, UNL ag engineer; Heifer Development – Before and After Birth, Rick Funston, UNL beef cattle reproductive physiologist; and Corn, Ethanol, By-Products and the Cow/Calf Operation, Tim Loy, nutritionist, Performance Plus Inc.

Question and answer sessions will follow both morning and afternoon sessions.

An optional tour of the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center will follow the 3:50 p.m. adjournment.

Registration is free and includes refreshments and noon meal. Pre-registration is due Jan. 19.
