Learn How to Start Value-Added Food Business

LINCOLN, Neb. — There are many great food ideas just waiting to be produced. Entrepreneurs who have one of those ideas should attend a Recipe to Reality seminar. This seminar is part of the nationally recognized Food Entrepreneur Assistance Program at the University of Nebraska Food Processing Center.

The next seminar is scheduled Aug. 10 in Lincoln.

"The seminar helps attendees understand the basics of starting a food industry including the challenges they will need to overcome. Entrepreneurs from all over the country attend this seminar. By the end of the day they are able to make an informed decision as to whether starting a food business is the right choice,” said Jill Gifford, program manager.

During this one-day seminar participants receive information on such topics as market research, product development, production facilities, packaging, labeling, pricing, product introduction, promotional materials, food safety and legal and business structure issues. Since 1989 the seminar has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs throughout the United States investigate the reality of starting a food business.

Becki Zanardi, owner of Moody Girl in Columbus, recently completed the program. The company produces salsa which is available locally.

"On our own, the decisions we needed to make in starting our own business were overwhelming. The Food Entrepreneur Program guided us from the very beginning, clearly giving us the options we needed, and made what could have been a daunting process into something very attainable. We had access to the assistance we needed every step of the way, and we are thrilled with the results," Zanardi said.
