Extension Satellite Training Will Help Promote Positive Peer Relationships

LINCOLN, Neb. — A University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension satellite training will help professionals who work with children learn how to better help kids deal with bullying and making friends.

Promoting Positive Peer Relationships will be from 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 2. Satellite viewing sites include: Ainsworth, Albion, Alliance, Beatrice, Blair, Burwell, Fairbury, Grand Island, Hastings, Hebron, Ithaca, Lexington, McCook, Norfolk, North Platte, O'Neill, Seward, Scottsbluff, Sidney, Syracuse, Tekamah, UNL East Campus, West Point and Wilber. Additional viewing sites also may be available. To host a site, contact Deb Schroeder at (402) 372-6006.

Marjorie Kostelnik, dean of UNL's College of Education and Human Sciences, will discuss ways to help children make friends. Children who have friends receive strong confirmation of their own value and worth. Kostelnik will explain how to initiate contacts with peers and how to maintain positive relationships overtime.

Susan Swearer, associate professor of school psychology at UNL, will present tips and strategies for reducing bullying in schools. Seventy-five percent of students identify themselves as being involved in bullying. Both bullies and victims of a bullies, typically experience high rates of depression, anxiety, behavioral problems and lower academic success.

"By participating, professionals will learn from nationally known, expert presenters and develop a knowledge base in handling youth development issues of today," said Schroeder, extension educator in Cuming County.

Educators, early childhood development professionals, people who work with youth groups, youth ministers or anyone else who works with children are encouraged to attend, she said.

"By hosting this via satellite, we give people the chance to participate in this outstanding opportunity without having to travel too far," she said.

Registration is $30 due by Sept. 18 to UNL Extension Cuming County, P.O. Box 285, West Point, NE 68788. Registration fee covers handouts and lunch.

For more information or a brochure, call (402) 372-6006 or visit the Web at http://lancaster.unl.edu/family.

UNL Extension is a division of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
