Poultry Group Announces Awards, New Officers

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Poultry Industries has announced annual awards and new officers.

Sheila Scheideler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln poultry scientist, received the Nebraska Poultry Industries 2008 Hall of Fame Award, and Joline Gordon, office manager for five poultry organizations and the Poultry and Egg Division of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, was honored as the Nebraska Poultry Industries Person of the Year.

Scheideler, a native of Bennington, Neb., was raised on a dairy farm. She received a bachelor's degree in animal science and master's in animal nutrition, both from UNL, and a doctorate in animal nutrition from Iowa State University.

Scheideler has been a poultry specialist at UNL since 1992 and currently serves as interim head of the Department of Animal Science. She received the Helene Cecil Leadership Award from the Poultry Science Association in 2007 and is known for her research and extension work, as well as advising many graduate students now serving in academic and industry positions.

Gordon, a native of Ogden, Utah, graduated from the nursing program at Weber State College in Ogden and worked at McKay-Dee Hospital.

She began working in the Nebraska poultry industry in 1989. She serves as office manager for five poultry organizations and the Poultry and Egg Division of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

Gordon has been instrumental in coordinating and implementing the Low Path Avian Influenza Initial Response Plan and Poultry Livestock Health Committee industry meetings with Deputy State Veterinarian Del Wilmot.
