UNL Workshops Educate Homeowners to Combat Termites

LINCOLN, Neb. — Workshops in May will help homeowners protect their homes against termites.

The workshops, conducted by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, will cover topics including termite biology and behavior, prevention and home inspection tips. Attendees also will learn what products work best and how treatments should be done to best protect the home.

The schedule:

May 5, Hastings: Adams County Fairgrounds, 947 S. Baltimore Ave., Contact Ron Seymour (402) 267-2205.

May 7, Omaha: Douglas/Sarpy County Extension Office, 8015 W. Center Rd., Contact Dennis Ferraro (402) 444-7804.

May 8, Lincoln: Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Rd., Contact Barb Ogg at (402) 441-7180.

The three-hour workshops will be presented by UNL Extension Educators Barb Ogg, Dennis Ferraro and Clyde Ogg along with Tim Creger and Buzz Vance, both of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

"A termite treatment is a huge unexpected expense for most homeowners. There are so many misconceptions about termites, we are concerned that too many people aren't making informed decisions about treatments," Ogg said. "We provide up-to-date information based on research results so the people who attend our workshop know they are getting the straight story."

More than 1,650 Nebraskans have attended the workshops since they first were offered in 1995. Surveys of participants indicate that nearly nine out of 10 were less apprehensive about working with a pest control company after attending and that more than eight out of 10 said they received information that saved them money in preventing or treating termite-related problems.

Registration at each location is $25 per person and includes updated reference materials. The workshop runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The public is asked to call in advance to ensure the availability of reference materials.
