Workshop to Focus on Food Safety Standards
LINCOLN, Neb. A weeklong food safety workshop this month will provide an overview of food safety standards, regulations and practices to government officials and food industry representatives from across North, Central and South America.
The workshop is co-sponsored by University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Food Processing Center and Department of Food Science and Technology, and the Institute for Inter-American Cooperation on Agriculture.
Presented in both English and Spanish, the workshop will address a variety of issues, including food safety requirements placed upon internationally traded food products, assessment of risk in food processing systems, identification of and protection against common contaminants, and good manufacturing practices in the food processing industry.
Rolando Flores, head of the Department of Food Science and Technology and director of The Food Processing Center, sees the workshop as more than just a chance to deliver information.
"This workshop is an opportunity for UNL to build relationships with decision-makers throughout Central and South America," Flores said.
"We have representatives from the ministries of agriculture of 20 different IICA members attending this workshop. If we can open a dialogue with those governments and the food industries they oversee, it will help us establish UNL as a primary source of expertise and cooperation on food and agriculture for the entire Western Hemisphere."
The workshop will be held in Chase Hall on UNL's East Campus, and will run on May 12-16. For more information, contact Nina Murray at (402)-472-2816, or nmurray2@unl.edu.
The Food Processing Center and the Department of Food Science and Technology are part of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
