West Central Equine Conference Scheduled in North Platte
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A May 21 West Central Equine Conference Trade Show at North Platte Community College, south campus, in North Platte will help update both horse producers and the recreational horse owner, said a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator.
The program will begin at 9 a.m. with registration at 8:30, said Brenda Aufdenkamp, UNL Extension educator, Lincoln-McPherson counties. It will conclude with a 3:30 p.m. drawing for door prizes.
Industry representatives will have booths throughout the college during the conference.
"Area equine producers and enthusiasts indicated they needed some adult education to help deal with rising costs and overwhelming nutritional needs for their horses," Aufdenkamp said. "That prompted a group of Extension staff to organize the conference."
The day begins with a keynote address from Kathy Anderson, UNL equine specialist on the "Unwanted Horse." She will provide a national perspective on this timely topic. Four group rotations will follow. Topics and presenters include:
– Horse Feeding Management Considerations, Monte Stauffer, UNL Extension educator
– Equine Dentistry, Cory Reng, associate professor, Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, Curtis
– Feeding Your Horse Economically, Gary Stauffer, UNL Extension educator
– Avoiding Liability, Randy Saner, UNL Extension educator
– Pasture Management, Doug Anderson, UNL Extension educator
– Fitting and Caring for Your Saddle, Dennis Rose, Rose Saddlery, Arthur
– Equine Health Management, Craig Dethlefs, DVM, and Kira Kautz, DVM, North Platte Veterinary Clinic
– Reproductive Technologies, Lee Jones, Frontier Genetics, Curtis
– Analyze Your Feed Ration, Bruce Treffer, UNL Extension educator

Preregistration deadline is May 15. Cost is $25 for those who preregister, or it will cost $50 at the door.
