Communities Receive Funds for Tree-planting
LINCOLN, Neb. The tree-planting state continues its tradition by announcing the 2009 Trees for Nebraska Towns grant projects. The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Inc. awarded tree-planting grants of over $200,000 to 27 projects in 23 Nebraska communities.
An additional $25,000 was awarded under the TNT Affiliates grant program to four other projects which, in addition to planting trees, will evaluate plant adaptability, nursery production methods and planting practices over a period of several years.
All TNT projects that receive funding are required to provide a 50 percent match. The TNT program encourages community service and rewards volunteering by allowing in-kind donation of volunteer labor to help make the community match. Projects are located on public or public-accessible nonprofit property.
TNT was developed to address tree loss in Nebraska and to improve the overall health, sustainability and species diversity of Nebraska's community trees. It is coordinated by Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Inc. and is part of ReTree Nebraska's efforts to plant a million trees by 2017. To help achieve these goals, the Nebraska Environmental Trust, a beneficiary of the Nebraska Lottery, is providing $1 million in grant funding to enable high-quality tree planting and associated landscaping in communities across the state.
The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum is both a non-profit horticultural organization and a program of the Nebraska Forest Service, part of the University of Nebraska's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. NSA achieves its mission of "sustainable landscapes for healthy homes and communities" through initiatives in education, community landscapes and the environment.
