The new Husker Produce Farm at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is expanding access to fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for the Lincoln community. The public is invited to a walking tour and caravan across East Campus from 9 to 11 a.m. July 22 to learn about the farm’s development and ongoing research focused on local food systems.
The Husker Produce Farm tour will begin at 4018 Walker Ave.
Topics will include the food donation program, internship and incubator programs, vegetable variety trials and decision-support tools, biostimulants and biological inoculants, hydroponic systems, low-tunnel systems and the Nebraska Urban Soil Health Initiative.
Collin Eaton, Husker Produce Farm manager, along with two interns and over 20 on-call volunteers, keeps the farm running with planting, trellising, pruning, weeding and harvesting. Nearly all spring and summer crops have been planted, and interns and volunteers will begin planting another round of crops in August.
Sam Wortman, professor and environmental horticulturist in agronomy and horticulture, developed the Husker Produce Farm, along with an advisory team that includes Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources faculty and extension educators passionate about agriculture, communities and food.
Husker Produce is a $90,000 grant recipient of the We Give Blood Drive competition award from Abbott and the Big Ten. The Division of Student Life at Nebraska was awarded $400,000 to support faculty- and staff-led projects that improve the health and well-being of UNL students and communities across Nebraska.
