Cahoon to receive honorary doctorate from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

Lincoln, Neb. — Edgar Cahoon, George Holmes Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been selected to receive an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The honorary doctorate is typically conferred to researchers outside of Sweden and recognizes outstanding academic achievement and significant contributions to programs at SLU.

Cahoon has actively collaborated with scientists in the Department of Plant Breeding at the SLU Alnarp campus for the past decade in the biotechnological development of new oilseed varieties with improved industrial properties. He is currently a co-principal investigator, along with scientists at SLU and Lund University, on the Oil Crops for the Future project funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. This project is aimed at developing camelina germplasm with seed oil compositions tailored for high value applications. 

“I am very thankful for this distinction and am hopeful that it will lead to greater collaboration between UNL and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences to enhance profitability of crop production,” Cahoon said.

Cahoon will receive the honorary doctorate from Anders Carlsson, head of the SLU Department of Plant Breeding, during ceremonies at the SLU Alnarp and Uppsala campuses on October 5 and 7.
