Hamernik named president of the American Society of Animal Science

Lincoln, Neb. — Deb Hamernik, associate dean of the Agricultural Research Division at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been named president of the American Society of Animal Science. She will hold the position until July 2017.

The American Society of Animal Science is a membership society that supports the careers of scientists and animal producers in the United States and internationally. It fosters the discovery, sharing and application of scientific knowledge concerning the responsible use of animals to enhance human life and well-being. ASAS was founded in 1908 and currently has over 6,000 members worldwide.

Hamernik has been an ASAS member since 1981. As president, she will lead the ASAS Board of Directors and represent the society at annual sectional meetings, as well as at animal science meetings in Brazil, Ireland, China and Argentina. 

Hamernik joins Irv Omtvedt, Abe Aberle, Terry Klopfenstein, Don Beermann and UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green on the list of UNL faculty who have served as ASAS president.
