Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska?

I participated in the Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium for two years at the Animal Science Complex, as well as the Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute for two years. As a result, I was able to interact with many welcoming faculty and staff members, student leaders and became familiar with campus.

Both of my parents earned their bachelor’s degrees from UNL, and so did several other family members. My father and uncle both were on the livestock judging team, my grandfather was on the Huskers football team, one aunt played basketball and another played volleyball.

What is your favorite thing about the University of Nebraska?

At UNL I am surrounded by so many talented, innovative students and well respected, inspiring professors. Each of my professors have been genuinely committed to providing me the best education possible, and actively helping me succeed. There are so many opportunities and activities available to all students. There is always something going on in Lincoln!

I especially like the peacefulness of East Campus, and I think it is beautiful during every season. I am a big Husker fan, and jump at any opportunity I can to watch a sporting event of any kind. There is a certain sense of pride amongst students, and everyone is proud to be a Husker and part of this institution.

What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?

I thoroughly enjoyed ALEC 200; Writing for Agriculture and Natural Resources with Assistant Professor of Practice Mary Garbacz. She gave me a solid writing foundation by focusing on writing mechanics, audience analysis, Associated Press writing style, professional collaboration, verbal and non verbal communication and interviewing skills. Writing is a key aspect in all careers, so I would recommend it to anyone - not just those pursing a communications career.

What are your plans post-graduation?

From a freshman perspective, graduation seems so very far away. First, I hope to simply enjoy my time here in Lincoln, and the Dairy Store ice cream. I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree and minor within four years, hopefully in May of 2020. I am interested in pursuing a communications career, specifically within the beef industry. However, I want to continue to stay open minded and ready for any opportunity that arises.

What’s life like outside of school?

When not in Lincoln I am at home working as the fifth generation on my family’s cow calf operation, the Diamond Bar Ranch Co. I love being outside doing anything on the ranch; riding horses and moving cattle, helping calve, brand, wean and work cattle. I am the oldest and enjoy watching my three younger siblings compete in volleyball, football, basketball and track.

Additionally, I am a member of Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Block and Bridle, Collegiate Cattleman and Alpha Xi Delta.
