Addition of university leaders enhances New Employee Orientation

For the past year, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Organizational Development and Training unit has enhanced its monthly New Employee Orientation by inviting campus leaders to share insights with new hires. The initiative has provided a valuable opportunity for employees to connect with senior leadership and gain a deeper understanding of the university's mission and values.

Each month, individuals from predetermined units present crucial information, ensuring new employees are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed. The inclusion of a leadership address has added a special dimension to the program, fostering a sense of community from day one.

In March, the orientation welcomed Tiffany Heng-Moss, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and incoming interim vice chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Heng-Moss shared her experiences and perspectives with the group, offering insights into the university's commitment to its employees. She encouraged attendees to identify their “why” — the reason they chose to work at the university and what keeps them there. She emphasized the institution’s dedication to supporting employees in their career growth.

"Welcoming new employees to the university through NEO reflects our commitment to their success and to fostering an environment where every team member has the opportunity to grow, thrive and reach their full potential," Heng-Moss said. "It is inspiring to be surrounded by exceptional talent dedicated to the success of our land-grant university."

The opportunity to hear directly from university leaders like Heng-Moss has been a significant highlight for new employees. It provides a platform to ask questions, learn about the university’s vision and understand how employee roles contribute to overall success.

"NEO was a great experience because the presenters shared so much beneficial information about what the university offers employees," said John Woodworth, assistant conservation forester with the Nebraska Forest Service. "They gave us tips on how to get the most out of our time here, which I greatly needed. The streamlined, concise format allowed for an effortless transition between topics while keeping the audience engaged. Hearing from university leadership about their personal experiences and what makes them happy to be part of this community was amazing.

“You can tell the culture at UNL is healthy, and everyone is respected equally. Overall, it was a very enlightening experience."

The Organizational Development and Training unit is committed to continuing this initiative, ensuring that new employees are able to connect with campus leaders and build a strong foundation for their careers.
