
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Barta Brothers Ranch Field Day is set for Wednesday, July 16, offering a morning of research updates and an optional afternoon tour focused on prescribed fire, grazing strategies, and livestock management.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT at the Barta Brothers Ranch, located 26 miles south of Bassett on Highway 183, then 8 miles west on 854th Road (listed as 444th Avenue on Apple Maps). On-site registration begins at 9 a.m.

This year’s program includes:
- Research updates on prescribed fire, patch-burn grazing, and rangeland production from Mitch Stephenson, Gwendwr Meredith and Hannah Allen
- Presentations on livestock nutrition and cattle reproduction from Rick Funston
- Eastern red cedar management in the eastern Sandhills, featuring Bethany Johnston, Grant Gydesen and a panel discussion
- An optional afternoon tour of the four-pasture patch-burn grazing research project
The field day offers an opportunity to learn and discuss current strategies for managing grasslands, livestock and woody plant encroachment.
