Recruitment efforts at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln are a huge undertaking. From admissions events to on-campus visits, it takes a lot of people to make prospective Huskers feel at home. On East Campus, the CASNR ambassadors are part of the team who roll out the welcome wagon to students and families.
As an integral part of the East Campus Visitors Center, CASNR ambassadors give every visit the VIP treatment. They tour students and families around, showing off some of the more fun spots on campus.
Student ambassadors also do group visits from schools in and outside of Nebraska and help with other events around campus like the Nebraska State FFA Convention. Everything the ambassadors do is about helping students and their families feel comfortable coming to the university.
“When I came on my campus tour everyone was really welcoming and they made East Campus feel like home,” Kaitlyn Hanson, senior animal science major, said. “I instantly knew this was the campus for me, and I love being able to give that same feeling to new students.”
Letting students know what college is really like across various academic pathways and showcasing extracurriculars is at the forefront of ambassadors’ duties.
“I truly enjoy it, because I get to meet so many different people,” Isabella Boyle, sophomore PGA golf management major, said. “I get to talk about my shared interest whether that be my major, the university in general, or Nebraska athletics.”
Ambassadors cross the spectrum of majors and organizations on campus. Represented majors include PGA golf management, agronomy, forensic science, agricultural leadership, education, and communication, amongst others.
Clubs and organizations that ambassadors are in include the equestrian team, herpetology club, Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), Sigma Alpha Sorority, and more.
Being an ambassador is a great way to get involved on campus and meet new people while building skills in public speaking and confidence. Ambassadors work with a large variety of people, which helps them learn ways to communicate no matter what the topic. It also encourages the students to explore more of campus and really see all that East Campus offers.
“I’ve been able to learn that it’s easier to communicate with people through this job,” Boyle said. “It’s also let me learn a lot more about the university since I started.”
The CASNR ambassador team is led by Sue Ellen Pegg, Aaron Henry, CC Swanson and Clare Hornung.
“Student ambassadors are peers to our campus visitors, so it's good for them to get that perspective from an actual student,” Sue Ellen Pegg, college relations director, said. “Seeing that connection through their eyes is really important.”
