Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and what drew you to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program?
I chose the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because it offered a strong academic foundation in agriculture while also giving me access to real-world experiences that are critical for a career in the beef industry. I was drawn to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program because it blends hands-on learning with professional development and it's solely about the beef industry. The opportunity to engage with industry leaders, participate in tours, and work alongside peers who share the same passion for cattle made it the perfect fit for me.
What has been your favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far?
One of my favorite experiences has been participating in industry tours and networking events. Being able to visit different operations and see firsthand how cattle are managed, marketed, and sold was eye-opening. I really appreciated the chance to ask questions, meet professionals at all levels of the industry, and learn about the challenges and opportunities they face. These experiences helped me see how the knowledge and skills I’m gaining in the program apply in the real world.
How has the Beef Scholars program helped you prepare for a career in the beef industry?
The program has provided me with both technical and professional skills. On the technical side, I’ve gained experience in cattle evaluation, herd management, and marketing strategies. Professionally, I’ve developed communication, networking, and problem-solving skills that are crucial in the livestock industry. The mentorship and guidance I’ve received through the program have been invaluable, giving me the confidence to start my career and pursue entrepreneurial opportunities such as growing and expanding Benes Livestock Services LLC.

What has been your favorite class or learning opportunity connected to beef, and why?
My favorite learning opportunities have been courses that combine hands-on livestock management with industry strategy. I enjoy learning not only how to manage cattle in a practical sense, but also how to evaluate their performance, make informed breeding and feeding decisions, and consider the business side of the operation. These courses have helped me understand how herd health, genetics, and management choices all work together to impact profitability and long-term success in the beef industry. I’ve especially enjoyed applying this knowledge in real-life settings, whether it’s evaluating cattle for sales or making decisions for our family ranch.
Can you share a memorable activity, trip, or connection from Beef Scholars (e.g., tours, industry visits, networking)?
A memorable experience was attending Rocky Mountain Sire Services, where I got to meet industry professionals and see the bull stud that I had been buying semen from and shipping semen to. It was incredible to see firsthand some of the leading sires in the industry and learn about how they approach cattle management, breeding programs, and the business strategy behind semen sales. I also appreciated the opportunity to ask questions, connect with the staff, and gain insight into the operational side of a top-tier bull stud. This experience reinforced my understanding of the beef industry and gave me practical knowledge that I can apply in my own livestock business.
What are your plans post-graduation, and how do you see the Beef Scholars program playing a role in your future?
After graduation, I plan to return to my family’s registered cow/calf operation, Circle B Livestock LLC, while continuing to grow my own business, Benes Livestock Services LLC, where I assist clients with sale consulting, order buying, and show preparation. The Beef Scholars program has equipped me with a solid foundation of technical knowledge and business skills, as well as a network of mentors and peers that I can rely on. Through this program, I have gained the confidence and expertise to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities in the beef industry while maintaining a commitment to providing exceptional service to clients.

Outside of school and Beef Scholars, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Outside of school, I enjoy working with cattle on our family operation, participating in livestock shows, and attending livestock sales. I also love exploring new aspects of the beef industry, whether it’s learning about different breeding programs, genetics, cattle marketing strategies, or seeing how facilities are set up and function. When I’m not working with cattle, you can usually find me browsing cutting horse sales or working our border collie dogs.
What scholarships or support have you received that have helped you during your time at UNL?
I have been fortunate to receive multiple scholarships throughout my time at UNL, which have allowed me to focus on my studies and gain hands-on experience in the beef industry without the added financial stress. This support has been invaluable in helping me take full advantage of opportunities like the Beef Scholars program, attend industry tours, participate in networking events, and engage in real-world experiences that will directly benefit my future career. The scholarships have not only helped financially but have also reinforced my commitment to making the most of my education and professional development.
