Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and what drew you to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program?
I chose to attend UNL because it offers one of the most highly regarded Animal Science programs. The diverse opportunities available to students caught my attention as I was eager to broaden and deepen my knowledge for my future career. I was particularly drawn to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program, which focuses on developing future leaders in the beef industry. As an aspiring production animal practitioner with limited firsthand experience in the beef industry, this program aligned well with my goals.
What has been your favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far?
The Beef Industry Tour has been my favorite experience so far. Visiting various operations throughout the year and presenting what we learned to the class, while planning a trip that highlights all sectors of the industry, has been a rewarding experience. As well as being able to apply knowledge from the classroom into real-world practice and experience.
How has the Beef Scholars program helped you prepare for a career in the beef industry?
This program has equipped me with practical skills and valuable tools that will enable me to contribute effectively to the industry. I hope to work primarily with production animal producers as a veterinarian. Understanding producer practices and strategies, as well as guiding them toward more beneficial approaches, will undoubtedly be an advantage in my career.

What has been your favorite class or learning opportunity connected to beef, and why?
My favorite learning opportunity connected to beef was my recent summer experience working in the ruminant metabolism lab. I participated in a metabolic study investigating the genetic correlation to methane production in beef cattle. Being able to assist firsthand in this research was both influential and educational, giving me a deep appreciation for the dedication and effort involved in advancing industry practices.
Can you share a memorable activity, trip, or connection from Beef Scholars (e.g., tours, industry visits, networking)?
A memorable experience during the Beef Industry Tour was traveling from a Five Rivers Cattle Feeding site in Colorado to touring JBS Foods. Witnessing the process from bunk to rail provided a unique insight into the beef industry. It was fascinating to see how nearly the entire beef carcass is utilized.
What are your plans post-graduation, and how do you see the Beef Scholars program playing a role in your future?
My plan after graduation is to gain acceptance into the Professional Program of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. There, I intend to focus on mixed animal medicine, with an emphasis on production animal practice, to effectively serve beef producers. The Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program has already played a significant role in shaping my future by providing in-depth exposure to beef industry practices, challenges, and innovations. This experience has equipped me with the knowledge necessary to deliver informed and effective veterinary care. Additionally, the program’s leadership development and networking opportunities have enabled me to build meaningful connections within the industry, positioning me to better support and collaborate with beef producers throughout my career.

Outside of school and Beef Scholars, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy engaging in arts and crafts with my roommates and spending time on the golf course. I am also actively involved in the UNL Pre-Veterinary Club, where I serve as the Club's Service Chair, and I recently joined the Animal Welfare Judging Team to further expand my experience in the field.
What scholarships or support have you received that have helped you during your time at UNL?
During my time at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, I have been fortunate to receive generous support from multiple scholarship foundations. These include foundational scholarships from Wilber-Clatonia High School, institutional awards from UNL and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), as well as significant contributions from Smithfield Foods. Each of these scholarship foundations has played a vital role in supporting my academic journey and personal growth at UNL.
