Mailson Freire de Oliveira

Meet Mailson Freire de Oliveira a Water and Cropping Systems Educator, serving Dodge, Washington and Cuming counties.

Lincoln, Neb. —

What is your background before coming to the University of Nebraska Lincoln?

I was born and raised in the heart of the Amazon biome in Brazil, in a town called Parauapebas, meaning “river of clear waters” in the Tupi-Guarani language. Growing up surrounded by lush landscapes inspired my path in agriculture, leading me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Agronomy at the Federal Rural University of the Amazon, where I first focused on weed science. My journey continued at São Paulo State University, where I earned my master’s and Ph.D. in Plant Production, specializing in remote sensing and artificial intelligence techniques in agriculture through satellite and drone technology. In the final year of my Ph.D., I was a visiting scholar in precision agriculture at Auburn University, and this experience brought me back post-graduation as a research scholar for two years. It was at Auburn that I discovered my passion for combining digital agriculture with extension, a blend of research and real-world impact that continues to drive my work today.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am a Water and Cropping Systems Educator, serving Dodge, Washington and Cuming counties.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

What drew me to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was not only its strong commitment to extension but also the stories I heard from friends who work or have worked here, sharing how fantastic an institution it is. UNL’s collaborative approach resonated deeply with my passion for bridging advanced technology and practical applications in agriculture. I found an environment where innovative solutions meet real-world needs, empowering farmers with the latest tools and knowledge.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy interacting with progressive farmers and youth. Their curiosity and drive to improve push me to stay sharp and keep learning. It’s rewarding to share knowledge, see it applied, and watch them grow in skill and confidence.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My greatest professional achievement is being able to serve the farming community by providing science-based answers and training the workforce in digital agriculture technologies. Helping farmers make informed decisions and equipping the next generation with practical tech skills makes a real impact, and I’m proud to be part of that progress.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that my family runs a small water buffalo cheese factory back in the Amazon, where I own some buffalos. I’m a big fan of water buffalo cheese of all kinds—it’s a unique taste of home and a tradition I’m proud of.

What is your life like outside of work?

Outside of work, I keep a balanced routine with physical activities like CrossFit and the gym, and I also enjoy playing eSports, especially Dota 2. Gaming not only gives me a way to unwind but also keeps me connected to friends back in my home city, making it a meaningful part of my routine.
