The third annual Haskell Ag Lab (HAL) Career Development Event (CDE) Invitational will be hosted at the HAL Main Office and Farm on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and Thursday, Feb. 12. The event has seen significant growth, with more than 300 students from 20 schools across northeastern and central Nebraska registered to compete.
Since its inception, the HAL CDE Invitational has expanded dramatically — from a single contest in 2024 to four contests in 2026. This year’s invitational will once again feature the popular Agronomy contest, along with Meats, Forestry, and Environment and Natural Resources (ENR). The addition of new contests, combined with strong outcomes from previous years, has contributed to increased interest and participation from schools as far away as Eustis, Nebraska.
Students will engage in hands-on learning and career exploration opportunities across plant, animal and natural resource career pathways. Contest components include specimen and retail cut identification, problem-solving and placing exercises, written exams, and team-based scenarios designed to reflect real-world agricultural challenges.
The contests are structured to closely mirror those offered at the Nebraska State FFA Convention held in late March, helping students prepare for upcoming district competitions and potential qualification for the state level. The HAL CDE Invitational will recognize excellence by awarding champion team and individual plaques.
Community and industry support plays a vital role in the success of the event. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring a contest or volunteering are encouraged to participate.
