Members of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln community can turn in or claim lost items at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Police Department.
Here’s what you need to know:
If you lost something
- Before coming in person, search the online database to see if your lost item has already been logged. You can also file a claim for items not yet listed through the system.
- If you find your item in the system and file a claim, allow two to three business days for police staff to review and confirm before pickup is arranged.
- Once a match is confirmed, you will be asked to pick up your item at UNLPD (300 N. 17th St.) with photo identification that matches the claim form.
Items accepted
The UNL Police Department will accept the following types of lost property from individuals or departments for secure storage and owner reunification:
- Prescription medication with identifying information
- Purses, wallets, cash, identification cards or charge cards
- UNL and personal keys
- Bicycles in working condition
- Electronic devices valued over $250 or complete sets with unique identifying numbers or markings
If you found something
Items can be dropped off at the UNLPD front desk 24/7. If you represent a UNL department and are turning over found property, please contact UNL Police at 402-472-2222 to coordinate the pickup.
Items meeting these criteria are logged and held for 30 days while attempts are made to locate the owner; unclaimed property after that time may be disposed of according to statutory guidelines.
Reminders for departments
Departments should hold other found items (not accepted by UNLPD) for 30 days in their own lost and found before deeming them abandoned and disposing of them.

Make your items easier to recover
Staff and faculty are encouraged to register electronics and bicycles with UNLPD property services. This helps return lost items faster if they’re found and turned in.
