Faculty Spotlight: Jessica Sperber

Meet Jessica Sperber, an extension assistant professor and feedlot specialist in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am an extension assistant professor and feedlot specialist in the Department of Animal Science. As an extension feedlot specialist, my role is to deliver relevant education and programming to feedlot owners, operators, and allied industries across the state of Nebraska. In addition, I teach graduate and undergraduate level courses in the area of feedlot management.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

Nebraska is one of the largest and most progressive cattle feeding states in the USA, so when I was looking into PhD programs in the field of feedlot nutrition, the University of Nebraska- Lincoln was high on my list. Completing my PhD in the Department of Animal Science at UNL gave me a strong understanding of the important role that feedlot research and extension plays within the cattle feeding sector and is what ultimately drew me to the feedlot extension position at UNL.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

Educational settings allow for research and discovery of various topics that are important for progress in the beef industry. It excites me to work with individuals that are just as passionate about the beef industry as I am, and I am fortunate to get to engage with and encourage students to pursue a career in the agriculture industry.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Having had the courage to move to another country, 28 hours away from home, to pursue my master’s and PhD would probably be my greatest achievement.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

Growing up in Canada, I was on a synchronized figure skating team for the majority of my adolescent years.

What is your life like outside of work?

My family owns and operates a cow/calf and grain operation in central Alberta, Canada, so when I am able, I head home to help out on the farm. My life is deeply rooted in the agriculture industry, and I can often be found at various livestock shows and exhibitions across the country. I enjoy golfing and playing slo-pitch when the weather is warm!
