Faculty Spotlight: Susan Burton

Susan Burton

Meet Susan Burton, a professor of practice in leadership within the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications.

Lincoln, Neb. —

What is your background before coming to the University of Nebraska Lincoln?

While I’ve been at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in various roles, my life between getting a master’s and doctorate was within non-profit and governmental organizations focused on program, financial and organizational development. I love the creative challenges of social entrepreneurship within diverse intercultural spaces and tools of appreciative inquiry in community development.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am a professor of practice in leadership within the Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications department. I teach Motivation in Leadership and Supervisory Leadership virtually for both undergraduates and graduate students.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

UNL’s International Office and the opportunity to Advise students on Studying Abroad. This had the secondary impact of pursuing graduate degrees.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy discoveries and creative responses. My courses are both about individualized discoveries and creative application to work and life contexts. I am driven (and encouraged) by facilitating the discoveries students make around the leadership content and especially about how amazing and unique they truly are with gifts to share.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

That’s an interesting and humbling question. I am naturally a big picture/idea-driven achiever and yet, in reality, my biggest achievement is currently ongoing in attempts to better the practice of habits that align with my purpose.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I hope people know that I seek to encourage them on their path to flourishing, and I sincerely enjoy their uniqueness! That’s why I ask so many questions. Also, I value play and reading books over cleaning up cat hair. I sometimes (often) miss the obvious while focusing on the meanings/patterns. I love to see the Creator’s hands at work everywhere.

What is your life like outside of work?

There is a lot of hopeful “trying” to do creative and meaningful activities with my children and others. Mostly, there is a lot of learning about “habits” that keep one’s home and life moving smoothly.
