Forest Service Sets Tree Care Workshops for Western Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Forest Service has scheduled 2014 Western Tree Care Workshops in McCook, North Platte, Scottsbluff and Sidney. These full-day workshops will be in January and February and will give instructions on different landscaping techniques as well as address issues associated with growing trees and other landscape plants specific to western Nebraska.

"Growing Healthy Trees on the Great Plains of Nebraska" will feature hands-on learning sessions, providing an afternoon dedicated to demonstrating how to apply techniques and information learned during the workshop. These workshops are designed specifically for landscape managers, public works employees, tree board volunteers, arborists, green industry professionals and landscape enthusiasts.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. with registration, the workshop offers a chance to visit one-on-one with foresters and other tree experts before the first session.

Other topics:

– Matching trees to planting sites

– Instructions in pruning

– Diagnosing ash problems

 – Benefits of community forests

– An outdoor pruning lab

 – Designing with trees: placement and companion plantings to aid long-term survival

Each workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be held Jan. 14 and 15, in McCook and North Platte, respectively, as well as Feb. 4 and 5 in Scottsbluff and Sidney, respectively. Registration for the workshop is $45 per person and will include lunch. A $5 discount is available for students, master gardeners, tree board volunteers, NSA curators, and NAA, NNLA and ISA members. ReTree Nebraska Ambassadors can attend the workshop for $15.

The deadline for registration for the January workshops is Jan. 10 and the deadline for the February workshops is Jan. 31. Those hoping to register can complete and mail the registration form but are encouraged to register online: go.unl.edu/westerntreecareworkshops
