Irmak receives 2020 Holling family distinguished teaching, advising and mentoring award

Lincoln, Neb. —Professor Suat Irmak received the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering 2020 Holling Family Distinguished Teaching, Advising and Mentoring Award. Professor Irmak’s peers often refer to him as a servant leader and renowned scientist, researcher and an excellent engineering educator who is nationally and internationally recognized for his significant contributions in the fields of soil and water resources engineering, and impacts of change in climate variables on water resources and agro-ecosystems productivity.

Irmak’s success in advising and mentoring students in engineering comes from him having joy in helping others and enhance their ability for critical thinking and implement research projects based on sound scientific methods, interpret research results, and present them in professional society conferences and publish scientific findings in reputable refereed journals. 

In addition to his passion for helping graduate students and mentoring next generation researchers and educators, Irmak also makes significant contributions to undergraduate student education. For his undergraduate student mentoring, he received the prestigious 2018 UNL Division of Student Affairs, The Parents Association and Teaching Council of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln “Contributions to Students Award.”

Irmak has received numerous awards and recognition from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Environmental and Water Resources Institute, NASA, USDA-NIFA, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and other professional societies for his research and education programs that had significant positive impacts on the environment and contributed to the well-being of citizens.

In addition to his work with graduate and undergraduate students and in academic settings, Professor Irmak’s passion in education, mentoring and advising in engineering spans beyond campus and scientific communities. He also educates many people, including growers, crop consultants, state and federal agency personnel.
