Lincoln, Neb. — The 2019 Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo Dec. 19 will assist soybean producers in planning for next year's growing season.

The expo, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:15 p.m., will be in the pavilion at the Saunders County Fairgrounds in Wahoo. The event opens with coffee, doughnuts and the opportunity to view equipment and exhibitor booths. Speakers start at 9 a.m.

Presenters include University researchers and specialists, Nebraska Soybean Checkoff representatives, soybean growers and private industry representatives.

“Decision Making in Uncertain Times: Marketing and Risk Management in the 20’s” will be presented by Richard Preston, Preston Farms, Hardin County, Kentucky. Preston believes the challenge of overcoming volatility lies in combining marketing plans, crop insurance choices, and farm bill choices into optimum portfolios that reflect each individual farm’s risk landscape and each individual farmer’s risk attitudes.

Daren Mueller, Extension Plant Pathologist, Iowa State University will discuss managing soybean diseases with fungicides, including making the correct diagnosis along with determining the right product and application.

Cory Walters, Nebraska Extension Grain Specialist will provide an in-depth look at the most economical grain moisture level to harvest soybeans and will explore the tradeoffs of taking a shrinkage discount to delivering very dry soybeans.

Justin McMechan, Nebraska Extension Crop Protection and Cropping Systems Specialist, will discuss the latest on observations and management of soybean orange gall midge. He will provide updates on gall midge adult emergence and research being conducted to manage this damaging pest.

Chris Proctor, Nebraska Extension Weed Specialist will provide an overview on managing waterhemp and discuss control options for soybean growers.

The expo also will include an update on the Nebraska Soybean Checkoff update and association information.

Producers will be able to visit with representatives from seed, herbicide, fertilizer and equipment companies and view new farm equipment during a 30-minute break at 9:45 a.m.

Complimentary noon lunch will be served.
