Shay receives IANR Outstanding Employee Award

East Campus pillars at enterance

Gary ShayGary Shay has received an IANR Outstanding Employee Award (OEA) for performance beyond what is expected of his work as Custodian II at the Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center in Clay Center.

Nominators wrote that Shay’s keen eye ensures things are clean, well-maintained and in good working order. His equipment and supplies are organized, environmentally friendly and in good repair. That, along with his work ethic and positive attitude, allow him to complete assignments quickly, cheerfully and in a “consistently superior” manner.

Shay’s farm background has taught him how to solve problems, think ahead when managing responsibilities, and the ability to troubleshoot almost anything. For example, after learning of a problem with the clean-out catch in necropsy drains, in less than 24 hours he had fashioned a tool from materials in a storeroom that made the task much easier.

In addition, the clinical aspect of the GPVEC provides living quarters for up to 26 students at one time. Frequently, one set of students leaves on a Friday and another set comes in on a Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. Shay flawlessly and with little fanfare ensures the living quarters are clean and ready for the new group.

Shay received the 4th Quarter OEA for 2012. Award recipients receive cash awards and certificates. Application materials for these and other IANR awards are at http://ianr.unl.edu/staff-awards.
