About Amanda:

I primarily grew up in a small town outside Columbia, South Carolina, where my parents worked at the military base. I have a bachelor’s in English language and literature and a master’s in creative writing with a focus in fiction. Previously I have served as a fellowships advisor and an engineering academic advisor before coming to the University of Nebraska. My husband and I have two corgis and a ragdoll cat, who take up the rest of my day.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

I am the graduate programs specialist for the biological systems engineering department, helping graduate students at each step from application to graduation.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?

There is never a dull day at Nebraska. Large, public universities always have something happening, students to learn from, research being conducted by faculty, service—I enjoy working at institutions where I am constantly learning, especially outside of my own discipline.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

The students are the best part about working in an educational setting. They teach you a great deal about their projects, classes and about yourself.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Receiving two university degrees on full academic fellowships. I worked very hard for my achievements, and those fellowships are tangible evidence that hard work pays off.

What is something that most people don't know about you?

I love walking, running and being outside by myself. It’s a great way to think through problems and come up with solutions.

What is your life like outside of work?

I read a lot—it’s the residual English major in me. Also I’m hoping to spend time in my backyard with my corgis this summer while learning to take care of the new raised garden bed and tons of plants I’ve installed.
