About Mike Kamm:

I have always loved video production work even from an early age. With a name like Mike (mic) Kamm (cam) I think I was destined to become a video producer. In elementary school, I remember shooting and creating funny videos with my friends. My first real experience was producing a weekly live newscast in middle school where I learned how to use a production switcher and reel to reel editing. From there I took a few classes in high school where I picked up non-linear editing.  As I transitioned to college, I pursued a degree in broadcast journalism. I quickly realized I hated being in front of the camera, but enjoy the production work behind the scenes. While in college I focused on video production but was also very interested in how television and live broadcasting were going to merge onto the web.  I learned html and other streaming protocols that really set the foundation for the skills I use every day.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am a video producer for IANR Media. I am responsible for all the live streaming and video capturing at the university and across the NU system. Ever watch a Heuermann lecture; IANR All Hands meeting or State of the University address online? Chances are I was the one “producing” the show. In addition, I work with UNL faculty and staff on educational video projects.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I was drawn to the university because of its innovation and culture. Because of the size and diversity of research, teaching and education video needs, no two days are the same.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

Since the video production unit is not tied to a specific department I get to work with faculty and staff from all over UNL and the NU system.  One day I can be in the Sandhills filming cattle, while the next day I will be shooting a training video in the biocontainment lab for UNMC. It’s really fun to meet people and work with them on various video projects and conferences.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I don't think there is one great achievement, rather life is full of achievements that shape who you are as a person. Looking back those are: having a successful career, getting married, having a child, building a house, and living life.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I grew up in Bellevue, Washington and was recruited to run track and field (indoor and outdoor) and cross country for the Huskers. While on the team we won eight Big-12 titles and traveled all around the county.  I also have a passion for air boating and on most weekends in the summer you can find me cruising on the Platte River.

What is your life like outside of work?

Outside of work, I have a beautiful wife and we are parents to a teenage son.  He is a competitive swimmer and it seems like our days are now filled with running to practices or swim meets.  Our son is also heavily involved in 4-H where he shows goats, rabbits and poultry and has wildlife, safety and rocketry projects.  I like to stay active and you can find me in the gym almost every day and I try to run or swim 3-4 days a week.
