About Rachel Szelag:
I grew up on a farm in small town Nebraska. I moved to Lincoln to go to UNL and liked it so much I decided to stay. I have worked in human resources in the Lincoln area for almost seven years.

What is your position at UNL?
IANR HR Specialist – Employee Relations

What drew you to UNL?
The history. My grandpa graduated from UNL. My parents met in the marching band and lived in the “married dorms” on East Campus. I met my husband and many of our close friends while going to school here. A lot of the process of taking this position felt like coming home.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?
The fact that knowledge and diversity are so welcome. You can be unique and do your job well, and be respected for both of those things.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
In May of this year I was one of the first to receive a Society for Human Resource Management - Senior Certified Professional certification. I am also back-to-back champ of my fantasy football league.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I create ridiculous and funny cross stitches for my friends and family.

What is your life like outside of work?
My husband and I always love to try new restaurants and new recipes. We also go to $5 movie night as much as possible. We have a Jack Russell Terrier named Lebowski who is adorable, grumpy and full of personality.  I love music, writing, football, and Netflix -- not necessarily in that order.
