About Sarah Plautz:

I was born and raised in Lincoln, Neb. I have a bachelor of science in biology and a masters in forensic biology/chemistry. I have worked at UNL for 18 years, in my current position for 11 years.

What is your position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I am a Research Lab Manager II for the Pannier Lab. Our main focus of research is engineering biomaterials and gene delivery. We currently have seven doctorate students and four undergraduate students who I get to mentor and learn from every day.

What drew you to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I have always loved learning! UNL seemed like the best place to work with people who also value learning and teaching. I’m grateful that UNL not only provides education for students but continued education and opportunities for staff members.

What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy being in an environment where I can work with students as well as be surrounded by innovative research that could change people’s lives in the future. I have gained a great deal from all the graduate students who have come through the Pannier Lab. It is exciting to see them come to the lab as first year doctorate students and watch their personal and research project progression to the end.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I was recently awarded the Omtvedt Servant Leader Award. It was an honor to receive this award and be recognized for my work helping others.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I have sang in my church choir for many, many years and the past three years have played in the handbell choir too. Being involved with music is an aspect of my life I continue to do even when life is busy.

What is your life like outside of work?

If I had to describe it in one word, I would say busy! My kids are now involved in several activities so my husband and I are going to practice, games, and dance classes throughout the week. When I have free time I enjoy cooking (especially when my kids help), reading, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.
