Hometown: Julian, Nebraska
Major: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Communication and Animal Science double major
Anticipated Date of Graduation: May 2024
Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I decided to attend UNL because of the great hands-on experiences that I knew I could get coming to UNL. I am a third generation Husker as my grandpa and both of my parents attended UNL. UNL also provided ag communications, which some schools don’t. I quickly added animal science as another major because of all the great experiences I had in this department.
What is your favorite thing about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
My favorite thing about UNL is that I am able to be involved in a lot of experiences like Block and Bridle, the Meats Judging Team and a campus ministry, Cru. It has a small town feel here on East Campus and I am able to connect well with my professors and classmates.
What about diversity and inclusion is important to you when you think about your CASNR experience?
Diversity and inclusion are always important to have in a place where you are preparing to go into your professional career. I think that even though there is a small town feel on East Campus, there is still diversity in terms of experiences everyone has had. I enjoy talking to others to see what their experiences or lack of experiences in agriculture are.
Exposure to cultural differences is a huge part of college. What activity have you recently participated in that is different from what you are used to in your culture? This could be something you read, listened to, watched, eaten or otherwise taken part in. What did you learn from this activity?
I think that something that I have been exposed to that is outside of my culture is when City Light, the church that I attend, hosted a multi-language worship night where we got to sing in different languages and just experience different cultures in one night. It really opened my eyes and got me out of my comfort zone.
What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?
My favorite class that I have taken so far is ASCI 300A: Intro to Meats Judging. I came into that class with little to no knowledge about the meat science part of the livestock industry and walked out of it being able to understand how to place classes of carcasses and grade beef. I highly recommend it to everyone because the meat industry impacts everyone!
What are your plans post-graduation?
My plans post-graduation are to work in ag journalism and then work my way up into a director of communications position for an agricultural-based company.
What’s life like outside of school?
Life outside of school consists of me playing cards with friends and reading new books. I also enjoy going home and supporting my younger siblings at sporting events and coaching my former high school’s meats judging team for FFA.
