Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

It was a stroke of luck, I was going to work with the Forest Service and honeybees were just a hobby, but one day I met the new Professor Judy Wu-Smart and decided to stay and help with the hives. The Bee Lab is one of the best places I have ever worked, Judy Wu-Smart’s lab is an amazing place to learn and work so I decided to stay. Getting a master’s degree in entomology was encouraged and I couldn't ask for a better graduate advisor. I also loved the department's camaraderie and staff atmosphere, so this is the best place to pursue the next step in my education.

What is your favorite thing about University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I really like the opportunities that a university this large offers, from overseas training, to programs like the one I currently run to train beekeepers, there really is something for everyone.

How has diversity and inclusive excellence played a role in your CASNR experience?

I love the diversity of people I encounter through the university, people from all walks of life, I get to see different ways that people manage bees, livestock, and their interactions with others. It truly has been a growing experience.

What is your favorite class you have taken so far and why?

I liked insect physiology. It was a very challenging course, but I learned far more than I ever thought I could about insects and the minute details that make them such effective and hardy creatures.

What are your plans post-graduation?

I would love to continue to work with honeybees and even do some work with them overseas. I currently run a training program for beekeepers, and I would love to see it grow even larger post-graduation as well.

What’s life like outside of school?

I am in the Nebraska Army National Guard so life can be busy with that as well. I enjoy bringing my biological training to bear in my army career and my army leadership training to my university job. In my spare time I also love to SCUBA dive and rock climb with my wife as well as design and build native landscaping.
