Lincoln, Neb. —The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking 20 instructors interested in incorporating sustainability and resilience concepts into their courses.
UNL is working to expand sustainability concepts into the classroom as a part of its Environment, Resilience and Sustainability Master Plan, which was adopted late last year. Among other goals, the plan calls for the university to become a net-zero campus in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and energy use by the year 2050, as well as for the adoption of sustainability concepts into teaching, learning and outreach.
Instructors selected for the program will receive training via four two-hour workshops during the spring 2021 semester. Those who successfully complete the training and have their module or unit accepted into the program will receive a $300 stipend.
“By bringing together the challenges and solutions to living sustainably and creating resilient systems, teachers can readily connect students to important societal issues including human population, increased resource needs, and human impacts on the environment,” said David Gosselin, director of UNL’s sustainability initiative.
Participating instructors will incorporate sustainability competencies into their course plan during the 2021-2022 academic year. Students who take courses from participating instructors should be able to do one or more of the following: define sustainability and resilience; explain how sustainability relates to their discipline, their lives, and values; identify how their actions impact issues of sustainability and resilience; utilize their knowledge of sustainability to change their daily habits and consumer mentality; and apply concepts of sustainability to their community.
Workshops are scheduled to take place via Zoom on Feb.12, March 12, April 9, and May 14. All will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.
To apply, send the following to Dave Gosselin at email@example.com: Statement of interest in the workshop; a paragraph that outlines teaching experience; class or classes that you plan to use the module in the Fall 2021. The application deadline is Jan. 25.
