The award is one of the society’s most prestigious honors for graduate students demonstrating academic excellence and leadership.

Students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln earned top honors at the 2025 American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) Annual Meeting, held in Portland, Oregon, with members of Kaustav Majumder’s research group receiving seven awards across multiple categories.

The awards recognize outstanding student research presentations in areas such as protein science, health and nutrition, and oral and poster competitions. The meeting brought together leading researchers and professionals from academia, government and industry to share advances in fats, oils, proteins, surfactants and related materials.

Emerson Nolasco, a doctoral student in Majumder’s lab, was named a 2025 AOCS Honor Student — one of the society’s most prestigious awards for graduate students demonstrating academic excellence and leadership in the field.

Sedoten Ogun, a doctoral student co-advised by Amanda Ramer-Tait, received the following honors:

  • Second place, Graduate Student Oral Competition, Protein and Co-Products Division
  • Graduate Student Travel Award, Protein and Co-Products Division
  • First place (tie), Graduate Student Poster Competition, Health and Nutrition Division

Prabhashis Bose, also a doctoral student, earned:

  • Second place, Student Lightning Talk Oral Competition
  • Third place, Graduate Student Oral Competition, Protein and Co-Products Division
  • First place (tie), Graduate Student Poster Competition, Health and Nutrition Division

Faculty and attendees noted the strong presence and professionalism of the Nebraska students throughout the event.

“It was incredibly rewarding to see our students sharing their work and representing Nebraska on an international stage,” said Kaustav Majumder, an associate professor in food science and technology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

“Recognition through awards is an honor, but more importantly, these students are gaining valuable experience by presenting their research and engaging with peers across the world.”

The AOCS Annual Meeting is one of the leading international forums for professionals in lipid and protein science and related industries, offering networking and learning opportunities to scientists, students and industry leaders.
