AVERY'S EXPERIENCE IN THE BEEF SCHOLARS PROGRAM HAS HELPED HER UNDERSTAND EVERY SECTOR OF THE INDUSTRY AND PREPARED HER FOR WORK AFTER GRADUATION.

Major: Animal Science

Minor(s): Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program and Agribusiness

Anticipated date of graduation: December 2025

Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and what drew you to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program?

I decided to come to UNL because I knew someone already in the animal science program who gave great recommendations about the program here. It was also fairly close to home, and I have always heard great things about the opportunities here.

What has been your favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far?

My favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far has been the industry tour. It was very exciting to see how operations can be so variable in other parts of the country/state. Also, getting to learn and experience all sectors of the industry on that tour was very beneficial.

How has the Beef Scholars program helped you prepare for a career in the beef industry?

The beef scholars’ program has helped me prepare for a career in the beef industry because I have been able to learn about all sectors of the industry and I feel very confident about them. I also feel like I have a good understanding of the marketing and economics that can be a factor when working in this industry.

“The Beef Scholars program helped me understand the economics and marketing behind the beef industry.”

What has been your favorite class or learning opportunity connected to beef, and why?

My favorite learning opportunity related to beef was going to Cattle Con in San Antonio. This was my favorite because I was able to learn more about the policies that go into the industry and how they are decided.

Can you share a memorable activity, trip, or connection from Beef Scholars (e.g., tours, industry visits, networking)?

A memorable trip was our tour to Colorado where we were able to go into a packing plant, feedlots, cow/calf operations, and many other different places.

What are your plans post-graduation, and how do you see the Beef Scholars program playing a role in your future?

My plans post-graduation is to work at Midwest Bank in Deshler, Nebraska. Beef Scholars will play a role in my future career because I will be working with producers at the bank and will now be able to understand more about the finances and economics that go into running an operation.

Outside of school and Beef Scholars, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family (and my cat), helping out on my family’s operation, and spending time outside.
