Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and what drew you to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program?
I chose UNL for its strong animal science program and hands-on opportunities in the beef industry. After high consideration of going out of state, I realized, after my visit to UNL, that there is truly no place like Nebraska. The Krtustinger Beef Industry Scholars Program stood out because of its focus on industry connections, leadership development, and real-world beef experience. I looked up to several students who were in the program ahead of me, and I knew I wanted to have the same great opportunity to dive deeper into the beef industry.
What has been your favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far?
My favorite experience has been participating in industry tours and the deep connections and friendships I have made. We had the chance to take several trips to various operations across Nebraska and bordering states to appreciate the diversity of beef production in different parts of the U.S. We met many industry professionals that I can reach out to in the future for questions or even just words of wisdom. I am also proud to say that I have developed some of my greatest friendships in college within this program.
How has the Beef Scholars program helped you prepare for a career in the beef industry?
The program has provided networking opportunities, mentorship, and practical exposure to the beef industry, which have all helped me build skills and connections for my future career.
What has been your favorite class or learning opportunity connected to beef, and why?
My favorite class was the Beef Industry Tour Class that we took our sophomore year. As a class, we planned a whole tour throughout Nebraska and Colorado to visit several ranches, feeders, and plants to fully explore each sector of the beef industry. This class improved our communication, planning, and organizational skills, and the best part was being rewarded with the trip at the end of the semester!
What are your plans post-graduation, and how do you see the Beef Scholars program playing a role in your future?
I plan to pursue a career in the beef industry, possibly in ranch or feedlot management or meat science. The Beef Scholars program has helped me develop industry connections and skills that will guide my career path. Although I am not 100% sure which sector I will choose to pursue a career in, because of this minor, I know I have the tools to equip me for whatever path I choose.
Outside of school and Beef Scholars, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy working on my family’s farm and ranch, staying active through fitness, leather working
What scholarships or support have you received that have helped you during your time at UNL?
I was grateful to receive the Inspiring Your Future Animal Science Scholarship in my freshman year as well as several Engler and UNL scholarships throughout my time at the University., and spending quality time with the people I love!
