SAM HAS EXPANDED HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE BEEF INDUSTRY THROUGH THE KRUTSINGER BEEF INDUSTRY SCHOLARS PROGRAM.

Major: Animal Science

Minor(s): Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program

Anticipated date of graduation: May 2026

Why did you decide to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and what drew you to the Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars Program?

I was drawn to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because of its prestigious Animal Science program. I knew that the opportunities offered here would allow me to make the most of my education. The KBIS program was an excellent fit for me as it would allow me to dive deeper into the industry that I am passionate about.

What has been your favorite experience in the Beef Scholars program so far?

My favorite experience through the program so far was our industry tour, which enabled us to see businesses in every aspect of the industry. My favorite part of the trip was our tour of JBS in Greeley, Colorado.

How has the Beef Scholars program helped you prepare for a career in the beef industry?

I believe that the Beef Scholars program is well-equipped to prepare students for a career in the industry because of the broad range of information it offers. After taking Beef Scholars classes, I have gained a better understanding of the industry as a whole, rather than just individual sectors.

“After taking Beef Scholars classes, I have gained a better understanding of the industry as a whole, rather than just individual sectors.”

What has been your favorite class or learning opportunity connected to beef, and why?

My favorite class thus far is our systems class. The systems class offered information on a system or one sector, followed by the economics that drive each system. This class provided an insight into the business behind the cattle, which I think is often overlooked by students preparing for a career.

What are your plans post-graduation, and how do you see the Beef Scholars program playing a role in your future?

After graduation, I plan to attend graduate school to study ruminant nutrition. After that, I hope to enter the industry on the production side, from cow-calf to feedlot. My goal of production throughout the animal's life span is supported by the numerous opportunities provided by the program.

Outside of school and Beef Scholars, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Outside of school, my life revolves around beef cattle. I enjoy going home and spending time on our cow-calf operation. It is incredibly refreshing to take in the open space and green pastures. The rest of my free time is spent working and conducting research at our UNL feedlot at ENREEC.

What scholarships or support have you received that have helped you during your time at UNL?

I have been fortunate to receive the David Distinguished Scholar award, multiple Animal Science awards, Nebraska Cattlemen scholarships, and Custer County Foundation scholarships.
