The University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Tribal Extension Office, in partnership with the Turtle Island Trade Coalition, is launching The Circle, an online workshop designed to blend traditional wisdom with modern business strategies for Indigenous entrepreneurs from across the Great Plains.
Held Sept. 12 via Zoom, the workshop will focus on business development strategies that help participants build resilient and impactful businesses. By weaving Indigenous economic practices with practical tools, the workshop will create a space for connection, learning and growth among its participants.
“This is about more than starting a business — it’s about grounding that business in who we are as Indigenous people,” said Tim Thielen, program coordinator for the university’s Tribal Extension Office and organizer of the workshop. “Our economic traditions are rooted in giving, sharing and honoring relationships. That wisdom still has power in today’s marketplace.”
The workshop will focus on the theme Navigating the Modern Prairie, providing actionable strategies in finance and marketing, including how to braid together different types of funding and develop culturally-authentic branding.
By emphasizing “Return on Impact” over “Return on Investment,” the workshop encourages participants to consider cultural, environmental and social well-being as measures of success.
“We want entrepreneurs to walk away with both a strong cultural foundation and a concrete plan for moving forward,” Thielen said. “Whether it’s securing funding, building a brand, or protecting their story, these workshops provide tools that honor both tradition and innovation.”
Registration is open now at The Circle Registration Form.
