Lincoln, Neb. — An increasing number of out-of-state students can be found in the 2019-20 freshman class in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. According to the annual census taken on the sixth day of classes, there are 228 new students from outside of Nebraska in CASNR, an increase of 7% compared to last year.
Undergraduate enrollment in CASNR rose to 2,471, an increase of 2.0% from 2018-19 and overall enrollment (undergraduate, graduate and professional) in CASNR rose to 3,222.
“We’re thrilled to welcome so many new students from out-of-state to CASNR,” said Dean Tiffany Heng-Moss. “This increase is reflective of our efforts in recruiting beyond Nebraska. Bringing students to campus from across the nation speaks to the broad appeal of the Nebraska experience. Welcoming more out-of-state students also strengthens our efforts to foster a diverse, inclusive environment on campus.”
CASNR has created numerous opportunities for students to take advantage of their time in the College, to help them grow both professionally and personally. Traveling abroad, participating in campus-based research, completing internships, and engaging with the local community are common experiential learning opportunities for CASNR students.
The backbone of these opportunities is the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR). IANR is a leader in the delivery of its tripartite mission of research and discovery, extension and outreach, and teaching and learning. These efforts place IANR, and CASNR, on the leading edge of innovation of food production, stewardship of natural resources, efforts to support the prosperity of rural communities, and preparing the next generation of leaders.
Total enrollment at UNL is at 25,332 students and remains nearly 3% higher than in 2010. The state’s flagship, land-grant institution increased its number of undergraduate students from states outside Nebraska by 3.3%, or 129 students, reflecting UNL’s higher profile and growing reputation in Big Ten markets as well as its efforts to recruit in key areas outside the state.
