Lincoln, Neb. —The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resource will host a free, virtual screening of the documentary film “Picture a Scientist” for any interested faculty, staff, students and partners.
“Picture a Scientist” chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
“Picture a Scientist” was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie will be available for screening Feb. 23-25. A panel discussion about the film will take place Feb. 25 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Those interested in viewing the film must register at https://ianr.unl.edu/picture-scientist-signup by Feb. 18 and will receive an email with instructions on how to access the film and how to participate in the panel discussion.
“While we have made great strides in gender equity, women in STEM and other research fields still face bias and discrimination,” said Rich Bischoff, IANR associate vice chancellor for faculty and academic leader success. “If we are going to move toward a more diverse, equitable and inclusive IANR where every person and every interaction truly matters, it is critical that we listen carefully to the experiences of female researchers, and that we find ways to address those issues that negatively affect their experience.”
All members of the IANR community are strongly encouraged to view the film.
